"I am so glad I bought this book! I have been doing remodels on the side for just a year now, and have done my best to "nail my numbers," in estimating. I have done well for myself, but I still have so much to learn. I've read probably a quarter of the book at this point and am devouring it! This is absolutely a resource I will keep and visit time and time again, especially as I start to integrate the plans set forth. Gerstel is relatable and easy to understand. I imagine this book would be a great resource for those who even consider themselves versed in the topics of estimating and bidding.

My favorite part of the book overall is how Gerstel incorporates pictures of jobs, screenshots of excel spreadsheets, and useful lists all throughout the text. It makes it easy to read, and doesn't feel so much like a textbook."

  • When I started my business 10 years ago, I read Gerstel's first book, "Running a Successful Construction Company" and found it invaluable. So I was excited to try his follow-up book. I was both frustrated and a little disappointed. The second book covers all of the topics that the first book did, but at much great length (almost 400 pages versus the first book's 270 pages), without necessarily adding much depth. In this book, he seems a little unsure of his audience-- he includes such basics as "how to unroll your plans" and "how to mark plans up" (with sharpened carpenters pencils!)-- things that are totally self-evident, but then combines it with really detailed information on estimating that may not be nec. for a novice. His basic idea-- that you need to track your production numbers in order to make accurate estimates, is great, and I have used it with moderate success for over ten years. But he can get bogged down to a level of detail that can make his idea unworkable-- literally, he gives an example of how a pretty client can distract your crew and change your productivity (!). Different work conditions, different crews, different clients; all can change your numbers. But precicely because of that, you have to decide if you want to spend (lots) of time getting that level of detail. Bottom line for beginning contractors, I highly recommend "Running a Successful Construction Company". This book I would only recommend if you really want to go down the rabbit hole of production number tracking.
  • Well written
  • It should be required reading for anyone thinking of opening a construction business.
